The three species we plant are all agroforestry trees, allowing crops to grow beneficially under their shade. The best way to protect our non-plantation seedlings is to mix them in with the crops regularly grown by the farmers in their productive gardens called 'shambas'. . In this situation they are protected against damage by livestock and people. Untethered goats, for example, can devastate newly planted seedlings/saplings. In their shambas farmers will not allow interference with their vital food sources so the trees are well protected.
