Who we are
The United Nations Association Eastbourne branch was constituted in 1945 although it’s origins began in 1919. Over the years we have maintained our focus on supporting the goals of the United Nations in respect of Human Rights, Peace & Security through Conflict Resolution, and Global Environmental Protection.
From the 20th century to the present the world has changed in dramatic ways, most notably in the rise in global population and in our collective impact on the sustainability of our fragile biosphere – which is our life-support system. Consequently, today UNA Eastbourne focuses on informing the public on issues relating to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to support practical programmes to achieve specific SDGs such as mitigating the effects of climate change.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals
Since 2004 we have developed strong links with Uganda as part of our responsibility to act locally and think and act globally (SDG 17). We encourage our members to offset their carbon footprint by planting trees in Uganda. This project not only directly contributes to the welfare of the rural communities in Uganda but allows us to meet our responsibilities to offset our own CO2 footprint, of which over 50% is now generated overseas. In May 2022 we initiated a further international link – through our tree planting programme in Bangladesh to help mitigate the increasingly frequent disastrous floods. Learn about our links with 4 per 1000 and METGE and why they are important to our programmes.
All of our regular meetings are open and free to the public. We are happy to welcome new members to our branch who share our values and wish to support any or all of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The support of our members and sponsorship by individuals and businesses enable us to achieve success in our projects. Our membership is our lifeblood and they bring diversity and new ideas in how to achieve a better more just world. We are pleased that we have good links with organisations sharing our ethos such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. Come and join us making and make us a stronger team.
