He explains why Mvule is the most efficient tree for carbon capture, and why Uganda is the best place in the world to plant it.

Foxtrotting to Peripeteia: 2 Planets and 3 Speeds Ian Elgie, FRGS, Chair, United Nations Association, Eastbourne, presented a zoom talk that offers a unique perspective on the climate challenge facing humanity and our precious biosphere. The issue is both simple and complex. This presentation offers a clear vista on what is required and, who should do what to avert the awaiting climate tragedy. With work experience in the tropics over three continents, including study in Amazonia, Equitorial Africa and Borneo spanning half a century, Ian brings his first-hand knowledge of the destruction of our key biomes to those keen to think and act decisively. Following the talk the Zoom recording was adapted into a 3 part series called The Climate of Our Making.

International Mother Language Day & Bangladesh Martyrs Day
An event was held at the Salvation Army Hall, to observe and celebrate Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day. The programme included a presentation of plans for a Shahid Minar (International Mother Language) monument in Eastbourne; speeches by dignitaries; music by children of multi-linguistic traditions and a short documentary film
about the 21 Feb. – The anniversary of when the Bengali language was officially recognised for Bangladesh and from that historic event the United Nations began the annual recognition of International Mother Language Day. Complimentary food from world cuisines was provided by sponsorship from Spice Garden & the Devonshire Collective, Eastbourne.

Eastbourne Carbon Neutral 2030 (ECN2030) launch event Eastbourne has pledged to reduce our carbon footprint to zero by 2030. This well attended event brought together members of the public with the local Council and various local organisations committed to making Eastbourne carbon neutral. Eastbourne UNA had an exhibition stand on the day and we had fantastic engagement from the residents. |
