UNA Eastbourne, Forum Member of the 4per1000 global initiative,
recently joined the Task Force for Objective B3 of the Global Initiative Strategic Plan. As a Team member of Task Force B3, our Chair, Ian Elgie, hopes to share the scientific work on the tropical species Milicia excelsa, which is key to our Mvule Project for Carbon Capture. Our project feeds directly into the key aim of ‘regenerative agriculture – enhancing the capacity. To understand the importance of 4 per 1000 for a Sustainable Planet read the Global Initiative Strategic Plan. The 4per1000 initiative now focuses on moving from ‘sustainable development’ to ‘regenerative development’ and especially ‘regenerative agriculture’ – making our soils more productive without degradation and, enhancing their capacity for carbon sequestration. |
Who we are
The United Nations Association Eastbourne branch was constituted in 1945 although it’s origins began in 1919. Over the years we have maintained our focus on supporting the goals of the United Nations in respect of Human Rights, Peace & Security through Conflict Resolution, and Global Environmental Protection.
From the 20th century to the present the world has changed in dramatic ways, most notably in the rise in global population and in our collective impact on the sustainability of our fragile biosphere – which is our life-support system. Consequently, today UNA Eastbourne focuses on informing the public on issues relating to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to support practical programmes to achieve specific SDGs such as mitigating the effects of climate change.

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
Since 2004 we have developed a strong link with Uganda, as part of a responsibility to act locally but also to think and act globally. We encourage our members to offset their carbon footprint by planting trees in Uganda – providing an example of mutual international support. In 2006 our branch initiated a Carbon Offset Scheme which not only directly contributes to community wellbeing in eastern Uganda, but at the same time allows us to meet our UK responsibilities to offset our own CO2 emissions, of which on average around 25% is generated overseas.
All of our regular meetings are open and free to the public. We are happy to welcome new members to our branch who share our values and wish to support any or all of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The support of our members and sponsorship by individuals and businesses enable us to achieve success in our projects. Our membership is our lifeblood and they bring diversity and new ideas in how to achieve a better more just world. We are pleased that we have good links with organisations sharing our ethos such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. Come and join us making and make us a stronger team.
